Ruler Work Class 1: Medallion Wall Quilt - Eugene

Have you tried free-motion quilting on your domestic sewing machine or table-top quilting machine, only to find you can’t move around as “free-motion” as you would wish? Do you want to sew beautiful, simple designs without the expertise required for all-over free motion designs? Then this “ruler class” is for you. Students will use the basic Westalee Ruler and Foot to design and stitch the project on a domestic machine. NOTE: This class cannot be done with any other foot and ruler – only the Westalee. See Paramount to order one for your machine.

Instructor: Glenda Correll         Capacity: 6

Prerequisite is basic free-motion quilting. Although this method is easier than basic free motion, students need to know how to move in a free-motion stitching manner to use this process.

Pre-class Instructions:

Please ask Paramount for the pre-class instruction sheet. These instructions must be done before coming to class.  There will not be time, nor space, to do this in class. Also please use a thin line permanent marker to put your name on your rulers. Write small so that you do no block the ruler lines.

  •         2 yards LIGHT colored fabric - PLAIN, no prints. Preshrink and press fabric, if you wish. Cut one front 24” X 24” and one back 26” X 26” reserving remaining fabric for binding. Also bring several small quilt sandwiches for test stitching (10” or 12” squares will work).Mark as instructed on the pre-class instruction sheet. (see above)
  •         1 piece batting cut 26" X 26". Use low/mid-loft batting such as Quilter's Dream Cotton "Select or Deluxe" or Quilter's Dream Polyester. Experienced quilters may use wool batting (more difficult to work with).
  •         Isacord 40wt polyester or Aurifil 50wt cotton thread. The color should match the fabric, or may be 1 to 2 shades lighter or darker. DO NOT use a high contrast color, or variegated thread for this project.
  •         2 bobbins wound with thread above
  •         Quilters gloves such as Machingers
  •         Westalee Sew Steady Ruler Starter Package (12” arc ruler & foot) for your machine shank.  Note: If your Westalee Starter  Package does not come with a “Spacing Gauge,” you can purchase one separately.
  •         6” X 12” clear acrylic quilting ruler.
  •         Optional: 10 ½” or 12 ½” clear acrylic square ruler, if you have one.
  •         Blue “wash out” (water soluble) marker. DO NOT iron lines until removed – heat will set these marks.
  •        Quilting or Topstitch needles (new) - size 80/12 or 90/14 for Isacord & Aurifil thread.  Please use a comparable size for your machine type
  •         Safety pins (30-35) to pin-baste the quilt. You may also use Pinmoors & Flowerhead pins
  •         Sewing machine in good working order (cleaned and oiled), with a wide sewing bed/surface or extension table. (A narrow bed is problematic. Rulers need a flat, wide platform for support.)
