FMQ - Eugene



FMQ1 - Beginning free motion quilting will teach students to master their sewing machines as they teach it to follow their lead. Students will learn the basics of FMQ using basic free motion quilting techniques. Intermediate sewing skills are suggested. Students MUST know how to set up their machine for free motion. If you need assistance, see Paramount before class day. FMQ is a prerequisite for the Westalee Ruler classes.

SUPPLY LIST

___A free motion darning or free-motion embroidery foot – open in the front is best. FMQ CANNOT be done without this foot. Ask Paramount for assistance in choosing one for your machine.

___Sewing machine with manual, plus extension table (a minimum of 3” – 4” is needed all around the needle for hand placement.

___General sewing supplies (scissors, etc.)

___Machine Quilting Gloves (“Machingers” Gloves are great – see Paramount)

___Blue wash out marking pen

___5 or 6 medium sized Safety Pins, optional

___Extra machine quilting needles, size 90 (use a comparable size for your machine type)e)

___Optional - a cushion/pillow to sit on to raise your seating level to the table height

 

Thread:

___1 spool vibrant colored sewing machine thread (bright red, bright blue, etc)

___1 spool white or off-white sewing thread (do not use Gutermann Thread)

___1 bobbin filled with the white sewing thread

___1 spool Isacord Poly or Mettler Poly, medium/light color thread (Do NOT select a medium or dark color).

___1 bobbin filled with the Isacord or Mettler thread.

Fabrics:

___12-14 squares plain (solid) white or off-white cotton fabric such as muslin, cut into 13”x13” squares (requires approximately 1.5 yards).

___6-7 squares thin Batting such as Warm and Natural (easiest to work with), cut into 13” x 13” squares.

Pre-class Instructions

Please have your fabric and batting cut to the sizes noted above before coming to class. We will begin sewing immediately, so there will not be time or space to cut during class.

Create 6-7 mini-quilt sandwiches by layering each 13”x13” batting square between two 13”x13” fabric squares. Pin or spray-baste quilt sandwiches. (If you wish to spray baste, please spray at home).
